United States - FTC Releases Top Complaint Categories for 2011
The Federal Trade Commission released list its of top consumer complaints received by the agency's Consumer Sentinel Network in 2011. Of the more than 1.8 million complaints filed in 2011, 55% were fraud complaints, 15% identity theft complaints and 30% were other types of complaints. Identity theft was the number one complaint category in the CSN fr the 12th straight year, with 15% of the overall complaints related to identity theft, followed by Debt Collection (10%); Prizes, Sweepstakes and Lotteries (6%); Shop-at-Home and Catalog Sales (5%); Banks and Lenders (5%); Internet Services (5%); Auto Related Complaints (4%); Impostor Scams (4%); Telephone and Mobile Services (4%); and Advance-Fee Loans and Credit Protection/Repair (3%).
